- **Event Description**: The first GCGSI meeting of 2026 will be Saturday, January 17, at 2:00 p.m. in the lower level of the Gilmer County Library. Our speaker will be Earl Cagle, Sr., a founding member and former president of our organization. He will share a brief recap of GCGSI’s history beginning with the Gilmer County Heritage Book Committee, then will discuss his family lines with the presentation “The Burnetts, from Scotland to Gilmer County.”

Braving the cold weather, Mr. Cagle plans to dress in his Burnett tartan kilt to discuss the Burnett Family, dating back to its origin in Scotland and its journey to Gilmer County, Georgia. In addition to the Burnett Family, he will also share information on the Edmondson Family. His mother Merle Leila Edmondson had roots in 8 Gilmer County families, with several tracing back to the Revolutionary War. The Edmondson line is also from Scotland, arriving in the early 1700’s. 

Join us for the January GCGSI meeting on Saturday, January 17, at 2:00 p.m. in the lower level of the Gilmer County Library, and bring a friend or two. If enough people attend, perhaps we can talk Earl into performing the Highland Fling!
