- **Event Description**: Come look for birds and native plants at this gorgeous preserve with owner Mike AdamsAbout this EventJoin us as owner Mike Adams takes us on a tour of this gorgeous Preserve.According to the St. Augustine Record, what makes these 94 privately-held acres special is the variety of natural habitats and ecosystems they contain, the names of which read like poetry: riverine grassbeds, hardwood swamp, silverculture, cypress domes and pine hammocks. The river and its shoreline are watched over by Bald Eagles, Ospreys, Belted Kingfishers and Brown Pelicans. To prepare for the trip, you might enjoy this YouTube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=li0aGfXizo4While the trip is free, there is a suggested donation of $10 for the Preserve. The Preserve derives its name from Indian chief, Saturiwa. Our Bird Walk Leader will be Michael Adams, who created, owns, and manages the Conservation Area. Mike is a biologist, educator, and researcher and also one of the past presidents of the SJCA. This trip is sure to be a wonderful experience! To find the Saturiwa Conservation Area, follow SR 207 south; turn north on CR 305; go about 6 miles and turn north (right) on CR 13 South; go 2 miles and entrance road is on the left (river side.) Look for the sign and orange cone; we will park up near Mike's house on the property.Bring bug spray, sunscreen, water, and a hat. Also wear sturdy shoes or hiking boots. We encourage you to consider joining the SJRA. You can join for as little as $15/year, which will help us continue and expand our work. You can join for as little as $15/year, which helps us continue and expand our work. To join the SJCA, follow this link: https://stjohnsaudubon.com/membership/• We generally host a number of bird walks and field trips throughout our season for our members and the general public. However, due to the Covid pandemic, we are organizing bird walks and field trips carefully this year and putting into place new protocols to protect our participants. Participation in our walks and field trips is currently limited to 20 people or less, depending on the event. SJCA members will have a priority when there is limited space for a specific event.• Beginning birders are particularly welcome at our events! The advanced birders who lead these events enjoy helping others learn about the habitats, songs, and lives of birds and how we can protect their habitats. • We also engage in waterways cleanups on a regular basis, which is a wonderful way to be on the water and see birds (as well as help clean our waterways of debris).• We support two Christmas Bird Counts, EagleWatch, Climate Watch, and the Florida Shorebird Alliance to protect nesting shorebirds.
