Empowering Whole-Person Care: Addressing Sexuality in Rehabilitation

  • Confidently initiate and respond to conversations about sex and relationships.
  • Strategies for documenting, planning, and communicating about these topics across common rehabilitation diagnosis.
  • OTs / OTAs will earn new credentials as a CSOT - Certified Sexuality OT.

Sexual health and intimacy are vital aspects of human well-being—yet they remain some of the most under-discussed topics in rehabilitation. Many patients - with varying diagnoses / injuries - are clear they want to address such topics as part of rehab. Clinicians know sex and relationships are important, but many feel they lack the comfort level and preparedness to provide truly holistic intervention. Studies show rehab therapists initiate discussions about sexuality only 30% of the time.

This professional development course equips physical and occupational therapists with the knowledge, language, and comfort to address sexual function and intimacy as an essential part of rehabilitation. Through lecture, self-reflection, case studies and hands-on experiential learning, this CEU event will equip participants with an enhanced skill set, the confidence to guide sensitive conversations and navigate interventions focused on sex and relationships.

CSOT certification: Upon completion, participating OT/OTAs will meet all the requirements to be a Certified Sexuality Occupational Therapy Practitioner (CSOT) and can be listed on the online CSOT Directory.

Course Objectives:

1. Identify 2 strategies to reconcile bias within therapeutic interactions.

2. Identify 4 client factors and performance skills which affect sexual activity and intimate social participation throughout the lifespan for clients receiving occupational therapy services.

3. Explain 3 performance skills which could be enhanced by an assistive device to meet activity demands of desired sexual activity.

4. Identify 1 specific intervention strategy for clients for sex and intimacy interventions during a group case study review.

5. Report on 1 action item which could be integrated into practice at your clinic focusing on advocacy, education, and intervention for sex and intimacy occupations.
