A Northern Michigan Sound Like No Other:
Based in Traverse City, Jazz Cabbage is the brainchild of songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Rob Coonrod, whose high-energy performances and dazzling guitar work have made him a standout presence across Michigan’s music scene.
Jazz Cabbage blends psychedelic rock, surf, soul, swing, honky-tonk, bossa nova, calypso, flamenco, jazz, and pop into a sound that is as unpredictable as it is electrifying. The result? A kaleidoscopic musical experience that keeps audiences leaning in and dancing at the same time.
Coonrod, son of classical pianist Michael Coonrod and cellist Jean Coonrod, was raised in Interlochen, Michigan. A graduate of Interlochen Arts Academy (guitar and theatre), he later studied jazz guitar and songwriting at CalArts under Miroslav Tadić and Larry Koonse. His musical journey has taken him busking across Europe, teaching in Bolivia, performing in Cuba, touring the United States, and collaborating with artists nationwide.
He has shared the stage with bands such as Blues Traveler and recorded multiple projects, including work with Smokehowl and his solo releases. A new Rob Coonrod album is currently underway, featuring guitar and lap steel player Matthew Valdiviez, spanning funk, country, jazz, folk, and rock.
Opening the evening is Faceless Jay, a performance project born from a tongue-in-cheek origin story involving sentient AI, too much Frank Zappa and Janelle Monáe, and a mannequin-like body brought to life. Masked and mysterious, Faceless Jay blends satire, experimental sound, and theatricality into a performance that is as visually compelling as it is musically adventurous.
