Sixth Annual Chicken BBQ

Etown CoB under Portico pick up
Elizabethtown Church of the Brethren will be hosting its sixth annual Chicken BBQ on Saturday, April 18th from 3-5 pm. This event is planned by the Witness Commission and will benefit The Haiti Medical Project and CCEPI (Center for Compassion, Empowerment and Peace Initiative). The proceeds will be divided between these two organizations.
The Haiti Medical Project is under the umbrella of the Church of the Brethren. The organization was started in 2011, following the devastating earthquake of 2010. The need is great for medical care, particularly in remote villages. The project also builds water systems and latrines. There are nurses that conduct classes to help support mothers of young children, teaching better hygiene and nutrition. The work is still being carried out despite the ongoing problems with gangs in Port au Prince.
CCEPI, was founded by Dr Rebecca Dali of Nigeria. Dr Dali’s organization distributes food, offers classes to widows teaching them skills to support their families, provides trauma care for those impacted by violence, rape and displacement. Presently she is building a Center in Jos. The first building completed is used as office space, storage and graduation ceremonies for widows that complete their career studies. A second building underway will be used as a hospital. She has written several books, the last being We Bore the Brunt, the story of her research and thesis describing the impact of violence for decades towards women.
The Chicken BBQ is made by Dennis Peters of Manheim. The menu includes a half of BBQ Chicken, baked potato, homemade baked beans, homemade pepper slaw, rolls, applesauce and homemade cookies. There will be 400 meals available for purchase. There are no tickets to reserve, the price is by donation. Meals may be picked up at the portico from 3-5 pm. This is an opportunity to help vulnerable people globally that are food insecure and displaced. Last year this event collected about $17,000. This is an opportunity for our congregation to practice Matthew 25.
