Once common in Arizona, New Mexico, and northern Mexico, the Chiricahua leopard frog (CLF) has declined throughout its range due to a combination of invasive species, habitat loss, and disease. Today, the species is federally listed as threatened.

For over 25 years, the University of Arizona’s Frog Project has been working to recover CLF by conducting landscape-scale removals of invasive American bullfrogs across southeastern Arizona. On the Las Cienegas National Conservation Area (LCNCA) to the north of the Research Ranch, these efforts combined with continued monitoring and CLF translocations have resulted in the complete eradication of bullfrogs from the LCNCA and the establishment of a CLF metapopulation. In the spring of 2024, the “Frog Crew” began a new effort along the Babocomari River to remove one of the largest remaining non-urban populations of bullfrogs in the region. During the past two years, over 10,000 bullfrogs have been removed from the river and CLF were detected in areas previously occupied by bullfrogs.

Join Chris Prewitt, Project Manager for the University of Arizona’s Frog Project, to learn about the history of CLF conservation in the area, threats to CLF, landscape-scale bullfrog eradication, and ongoing studies to better understand CLF dispersal and their responses to bullfrog eradication. The event will begin at 5:00 p.m. with the potluck dinner beginning at about 5:30 p.m. (we'll announce when it's time to eat!). The presentation will immediately follow the meal. Come join us, invite a friend, and bring a dish to share. We also have a collection bin for food items to donate to the Santa Cruz food bank!
