Writing the Future of Darkwave
From Brussels to the World
Born in Brussels—a city where medieval history collides with a relentless underground pulse—ULTRA SUNN has emerged as one of the most vital and forward-thinking voices in contemporary darkwave.
Formed in late 2019 by vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Sam Huge and keyboardist/producer Gaelle Souflet, the duo quickly carved out a singular identity at the crossroads of legacy and modernity. Drawing from Belgium’s storied electronic past while speaking directly to the anxieties and desires of the present, ULTRA SUNN stands as both inheritor and innovator.
Their origin story is rooted in contrast. Sam’s background in classical arts and archaeology and Gaelle’s training in fashion design are far removed from club culture—yet together they shared a vision of electronic music as more than escapism. For ULTRA SUNN, sound is catharsis, community, and resistance.
That vision crystallized with their 2020 debut single “Keep Your Eyes Peeled.” More than an introduction, it was a manifesto: a pulsing call for awareness and resilience. The track spread rapidly from underground dance floors to global platforms, surpassing 40 million streams and announcing ULTRA SUNN as a force impossible to ignore.
Sonically, ULTRA SUNN channels the DNA of the Sound of Belgium—the discipline of EBM, the alien edge of New Beat, and the nocturnal melancholy of coldwave—without succumbing to nostalgia. Their music is razor-sharp and unmistakably modern, driven by Sam’s commanding baritone and Gaelle’s hypnotic synth architectures. Vulnerability and defiance coexist, with themes of mental health, identity, and empowerment embedded in anthemic melodies and relentless rhythms.
This balance—underground intensity paired with pop immediacy—propelled ULTRA SUNN onto international stages alongside pioneers such as Front 242, DAF, and Front Line Assembly, while aligning them with modern torchbearers like Twin Tribes and Kontravoid. Renowned for their live performances, the duo transforms each show into a ritual: bodies moving in unison, lights cutting through darkness, a shared release of sound and emotion.
Their ascent has been swift and global. A trilogy of EPs established their reputation worldwide, leading to a multi-album deal with Artoffact Records in 2023. Their debut LP, US (2024), confirmed the promise—celebrated with a sold-out release show at Brussels’ legendary Botanique, followed by tours across the USA, Canada, Europe, and Latin America. Festival appearances included Sick New World (Las Vegas), Substance Festival (Los Angeles), Sanctum Festival (Chicago), Verboden Festival (Vancouver), Øya Festival (Oslo), Grauzone Festival (Den Haag), and Dour Festival (Belgium).
Later that year, ULTRA SUNN was named Band of the Year at the Octaves de la Musique, one of Belgium’s highest cultural honors.
