L'invention du quotidien / exhibition at Wallspace

January 25 – February 22 2019

Opening friday January 25, 20:00

All welcome! Bar is open!

In the exhibition L’invention du quotidien*, Tyrell Kuipers, Bas van de Hurk and Guus van der Velden explore the abstraction of everyday reality. The perspective change that happens when you switch from the common to the daily can be compared to experiencing a city. Looking from above, from a more objective point of view, you see structures in the city. Whilst walking in the city itself, a more subjective experience happens. Suddenly you lose the overview and the general idea is left behind. From the common to the specific, perspective changes from the general view to the individual outlook.
The three artists translate the daily into the more common and the specific into abstraction. The designed and the determined takes form in colour and in shape, in scale, size and composition. Whilst gazing upon this abstraction, everyone has a different experience. One’s own view can be shared with others and a dialogue can take place. In its turn, the individual perspective can be translated back into a more general view of things. This way of seeing is not only a view on art, but moreover a view on life, and its lived experience.

Wallspace is a new artspace in the centre of Eindhoven showing and selling contemporary art and design, including an independent artists bookshop called Blitz Books. Wallspace is an extension of Wallstreet, the alternative economic institution that investigates value. At Wallstreet you can eat and drink, at Wallspace we organize exhibitions, inspired by Situationist theory and practice. Wallspace is curated by Pernilla Ellens.

Tyrell Kuipers (1994) is based in Tilburg. She studied 'Art and Education' at Fontys School of Fine and Performing Arts. With her graduation work she won the 'Leo XIII'-prize, from which she jumped right into a residency for three months. In her work Tyrell uses objects with everyday meaning and copies them or lately often translates them into bright paintings.
Her work plays with the simularities between the unremarkable and the aesthetic. Kuipers is the co-founder of art initiative De Roze Sokkel and has exhibited, amongst others, at Kunstpodium T, Bergarde Galleries and TAC.

Bas van den Hurk (1965), Tilburg, studied Fine Art at Academy St.Joost in Breda and Philosophy of Aesthetics at the University of Amsterdam. Van den Hurk’s practice circles around questions of ‘transitivity’, an influential term borrowed from David Joselit’s ‘Painting Beside Itself’, which describes the ability of 'expressing an action which passes over to an object'. The work thereby pulls back and forth in a permanent tension that on the one hand strives for radical autonomy and on the other is aware of the fact that it is part of a heteronomous network of texts, histories, modes of production and commodification. His work has been showed worldwide at, amongst others, Wendy Cooper Gallery, Chicago, Autocenter, Berlin, Liste Basel, Paul Andriesse, Amsterdam. Van den Hurk teaches contemporary theory and research at the BA and MFA of AKV/ St.Joost.

Guus van der Velden (1989), based in Eindhoven, is interested in how things are made and how they can be made. This interest leads him to investigate a large number of different media, to bring them back again and again to an archetypal form from which his own actions can be deduced. Van der Velden received his bachelor in Installation Art and his master in Sculptural Art from the KASK in Ghent. He exhibited at amongst others the Kabinetten of the Vleeshal, Middelburg, and Kristof de Clercq gallery, Ghent. In 2017, van der Velden received the Werkbijdrage Jong Talent stipendium from the Mondriaan Fonds.
