Read With Pride: Historical Romance in Chinatown 🏮✨
Step back into the neon-lit streets of 1950s San Francisco with us! Join Mountain Pride and The Bookworm of Edwards for our April Read With Pride Book Club as we explore a breathtaking story of first love, cultural identity, and courage.
We’ll be diving into the National Book Award winner, Last Night at the Telegraph Club by Malinda Lo.
About the Book: Last Night at the Telegraph Club
Seventeen-year-old Lily Hu lives in San Francisco’s Chinatown during a time when the world feels both expanding and incredibly small. While she dreams of the math that will send humans into space, she finds herself navigating the complex puzzle of her own identity.
Everything changes when she and her friend Kathleen Miller walk under the flashing neon sign of a lesbian bar called the Telegraph Club. But 1954 America is a dangerous place for their love to bloom. Between the “Red Scare” paranoia of McCarthyism and the threat of deportation looming over her family, Lily and Kath must risk everything to be together. This is a “lush, ambitious, and layered” story of intersecting identities and the bravery it takes to be oneself.
Come for the Connection, Stay for the Community!
Everyone is welcome—even if you haven’t finished the book! Whether you’re here for the historical deep dive or just want to hang out with a wonderful group of people, we can’t wait to see you.
