Jacob Do is a saxophonist, composer, and educator whose resonant and nuanced sound lends itself to emotional storytelling through improvisation. Jacob elevates and serves the music through his authentic, precise, and ambitious approach as an improviser, connecting to audiences on a deeply human level. As an artist, he has crafted original compositions and arrangements, unified by soundscapes of intensity and vulnerability; all while being immensely steeped in the rich tradition of Black American Music. He has been praised as “a musician of great talent, and his success comes from a combination of daily practice and his musicality” (Rémi Bolduc). Jacob is currently based in
Edmonton, AB, where he is quickly establishing himself as a prominent voice in the city’s music scene.

Jacob was born and raised in Edmonton, AB, where he received his formative music education, studying with Juno-award winning musician Jeremiah McDade. During his youth, Jacob was a member of “The Littlebirds”, an all-star youth jazz program directed by Edmonton trumpeter Joel Gray. Attending many shows at Canada’s longest volunteer-run jazz club, the Yardbird Suite, Jacob was exposed to a high level of jazz throughout his teenage years, cementing a strong foundation for a promising musical future.

In 2021, Jacob completed his Jazz Performance degree in Montreal at McGill University’s Schulich School of Music, where he worked with some of Canada’s most renowned musicians, including Rémi Bolduc, Donny Kennedy, John Hollenbeck, and Andre White. Jacob was also a member of the McGill Jazz Orchestra I, directed by Juno-award winning saxophonist and composer Christine Jensen. Jacob has performed and collaborated with many of Canada’s jazz greats, including Kevin Dean, PJ Perry, Aretha Tillotson, Allison Au, Jim Head, Chris Andrew, Dave Laing, Paul Johnston, Jean-Michel Pilc, Jens Lindemann and the late Tommy Banks.

Jacob has performed at various venues and festivals around Canada, including the Edmonton, Ottawa, and Montreal International Jazz Festivals. He also appears regularly at Edmonton’s Yardbird Suite as both an in-demand bandleader and side-person. As an Edmonton resident, he collaborates with many
local musicians, most recently appearing on Aretha Tillotson’s debut record “Introducing Aretha Tillotson.”

Jacob is the recipient of several awards, including the inaugural Oliver Jones Award (2019), presented by the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal and Stingray Music. Created as part of the Festival's 40th anniversary, the award is given every year to a student studying in Quebec who identifies as a visible minority; it honours the living legacy of great pianist Oliver Jones, whose career was devoted to developing and inspiring young artists. Jacob was also awarded a Stingray Rising Star Award that same year at the Ottawa International Jazz Festival.
