Kathara Deytera (Clean Monday) marks the beginning of Great Lent in Greece — a day of renewal, reflection, and joyful connection. Celebrated 48 days before Greek Orthodox Easter, it is a moment when communities gather outdoors to welcome spring with hope and positivity.

Across the country, families come together in parks, on hillsides, and by the sea. The sky fills with colourful kites, symbolising spiritual uplift and new beginnings. Laughter, music, and shared Lenten feasts create a feeling of warmth and belonging — a reminder that tradition is strongest when shared.

At the heart of the table is Lagana — the traditional flatbread baked especially for this day. Made with simple, pure ingredients and generously topped with sesame seeds, Lagana represents humility, nourishment, and community.

This year, handmade organic laganas will be freshly prepared on the day at Lady and the Bear, bringing the authentic spirit and flavour of Kathara Deytera to our community. Each lagana is crafted by hand using organic ingredients and traditional methods — slow-fermented, carefully shaped, and baked fresh to honour this beautiful Greek custom of gathering and sharing.

The Lenten table is filled with plant-based delights: olives, taramasalata, legumes, seasonal vegetables, seafood such as octopus and shellfish, and sweet halva. Simple yet abundant, the meal reflects the deeper meaning of the day — cleansing the body, uplifting the spirit, and strengthening bonds with family and friends.
