The family built Ballindalloch Castle on the same estate in 1546, but it wouldn't be until 1869 that they would enter the whisky business when Sir George Macpherson-Grant, the 3rd Baronet, leased a portion of the estate to John Smith to build Cragganmore distillery. Sir George was also an associate of Robert Hay (I'm sure our Rab is no relation!), who would build the world famous Glenfarclas distillery on the north side of the estate. The family would retain an interest in Cragganmore until 1965 when they sold their stake to giants the Distillers Company Limited (now Diageo).
