Attend in person or online.Following the theory of Boarding School Syndrome proposed by Joy Schaverien, the psychological issues experienced by boarding school students in the UK are highlighted. In China, there are more than 52 million boarding students at primary and secondary schools, which comprise over 28% of all students in those schools as of 2021.In this seminar, Tianmu Nie presents the findings of his doctoral project, which used a narrative approach to explore the Chinese boarding school experience. To portray and understand the boarding school experience embedded in the Chinese culture, this project highlights the participants’ emotional and relational experiences and their sense-making processes, illustrating rich and diverse narratives and understandings of attending Chinese boarding schools.The presentation in this seminar focuses on the clinical application of this project. To understand clients with previous experiences in Chinese boarding schools, the talk starts from the rituals and settings in Chinese boarding schools and moves to the boarding school students’ relational experiences with not only family, but also peers and staff at school.This event will be relevant to counsellors, psychotherapists, other health professionals and also parents, as it will help them better understand how those findings could facilitate their practice and parenting.Tianmu Nie is a doctoral student in Counselling and Psychotherapy at the University of Edinburgh. He is also a practitioner with experience across schools, counselling centres, psychiatric hospitals and universities in China and the UK.
