Hybrid seminar.About this EventAbstract: This talk explores how exposure to income instability during childhood affects children’s educational outcomes in Germany (based on a paper co-authored with Kristina Lindemann and Markus Gangl). We use data from the German Socioeconomic Panel to analyse three separate dependent variables: 1) attendance at academic secondary school, 2) grades in German and Mathematics at age 17, and 3) aspirations to attend university. The results indicate significant adverse associations between income instability in early childhood and attending academic secondary school. Yet, this effect is not shown for educational aspirations and attainment at age 17, suggesting that different mechanisms become more important as children progress through their educational journeys.Speaker: Dr Fiona Pashazadeh is a Research Associate with the Institute for Education, Community and Society at the University of Edinburgh. Her current research focuses on using advanced quantitative methods to investigate family instability and children’s educational outcomes, particularly intergenerational effects and income inequality.
