- **Event Name**: A Mysterious Music Book from 16th-century Corstorphine
- **Event Start and End Date**: Thu, 03 Sep, 2026 at 08:00 am (+01:00)
- **Event Description**: Dr Paul Newton-Jackson’s talk will feature music last heard in Scotland in the 1550s, now newly edited and sung in the splendid accoustic of Corstorphine Old Church by Ensemble Mater Matris. Dr Newton-Jackson will share the results of a three-year research project into the history of a remarkable and enigmatic manuscript, and how its contents have re-shaped our understanding of sacred musical culture in Scotland on the eve of the Reformation. This event will celebrate one of the great musical treasures of sixteenth-century Scotland, a manuscript of church music known today as the ‘Dunkeld Music Book’ (Edinburgh University Library, MS 64). Attendees will hear excerpts from ornate Latin masses and motets resounding in a beautifully preserved historic space, and will learn why the music-book’s modern name belies a hidden connection with the collegiate church of Corstorphine.
