The very nature of its message -about the dangers of unchecked government power, the manipulation of truth, and the suppression of individual thought and freedom - has made it a subject of controversy and attempts at censorship by various governments and groups since the 1980s. 1984 has been banned or challenged for various reasons, including its explicit sexual content and themes, its potentially subversive social and political themes, and, ironically, for being mistakenly viewed as promoting communism by some.
