AUTHOR TALK AND WORKSHOP
NB: Arrangementet foregår på engelsk
Meet textile artist, educator and author Julia Triston, as we focus this evening on the power of textiles as a political expression and activist tool.
AUTHOR TALK
In August this year, Julia Triston’s latest book, Textile Protest, was published by Batsford Books, UK. It is a timely and comprehensive work that explores how textiles have been used for political protest in the 20th and 21st centuries, from the embroidered banners of the Suffragettes, and the knitted pussyhats of the 2017 Women's March, to the Pride flags that celebrate the LGTBQ+ community and the huge variety of textile art in support of Black Lives Matter.
In the first half of the evening, Julia will present an illustrated talk about Textile Protest, its important messages, and speak about her own artistic practice.
WORKSHOP
After Julia's talk, you will have the opportunity to try your hand at textile activism in a workshop where you can transform your message into an embroidered badge or mini-banner.
ABOUT JULIA
Julia Triston is a British textile artist now living in Ebeltoft. She is internationally recognized for her work within the field of textile art, and has worked in the creative industries for more than 35 years as an educator, mentor and artist.
Julia has always been interested in textiles and text as a form of personal and collective expression, and has stitched thousands of words upon cloth. She is particularly interested in making statement textiles, including banners, quilts and autobiographical artworks, inspired by themes of identity, visibility and sustainability. Her conceptual works invite debate, and she increasingly uses text to convey personal and political messages.
In her artistic practice, Julia predominantly works with reclaimed materials, such as household linen, uniforms, discarded embroideries and second-hand clothing. She is fascinated by the traces, stains and memories that textiles carry with them, often including them in her artworks.
Julia teaches textile art and design courses across the world and co-founded an international stitch school. She has co-written two other Batsford titles and international curricula on textile art. Julia exhibits her artworks globally and her work has been featured in many publications and filmed by independent filmmakers, the BBC and Sky Arts.
