He also writes music for his own band the Jason Collins Septet and Weapons of Brass Destruction, and is a member of the Chippewa Valley Composers Association. His music incorporates odd meter and melodic layering inspired by Thelonious Monk, Dave Holland and Charles Mingus. He performs at Phoenix Park, Owen Park, Menomonie Public Library and Mabel Tainter Theater. He teaches English at Menomonie High School and lives with his family in the city of Menomonie with an ever growing flower garden taking over the backyard.
