- **Event Description**: Calling all marine-mammal loving islanders! If you are interested in participating in the San Juan County Marine Mammal Stranding Network (SJCMMSN), we have 2 volunteer trainings for you to choose from:
April 17 @ Orcas Island Public Library's Community Room, 6-8pm
May 1 @ The Whale Museum, San Juan Island, 6-8pm

SJCMMSN monitors the hotline for stranded marine mammals in San Juan county (1-800-562-8832). We work closely with SeaDoc Society and are authorized by NOAA to respond to stranded marine mammals (live and dead seals, sea lions, porpoises, dolphins, and whales). With over 400 miles of shoreline and an abundance of marine life in this county, we can't do this work alone - and that's where you come in. We rely on our volunteers in many ways including responding to reports, helping us transport animals, conducting entanglement surveys, assisting with necropsies, developing equipment, and much more. We have both hands-on and hands-off ways for you to be involved.

To participate with us in 2025, you must attend one of our volunteer trainings: April 17 on Orcas (Orcas Island Public Library, 6-8pm) OR May 1 on San Juan (The Whale Museum, 6-8pm). Please email your RSVP to erin@whalemuseum.org by April 10 if you wish to attend either and/or have any questions. Come to the trainings prepared to take notes, ask questions, and practice measuring a seal. If you have volunteered with us before we ask that you still try to attend one of these as we have valuable new information (and a refresher never hurts). There will be snacks!
