In the Letter to the Hebrews, we are admonished not to “forsake the assembling of ourselves together, as is the habit of some” (Hebrews 10:25). Yet, while we may meet together as much as possible, it is not always possible to have the Sacrament of Holy Communion as a pastor – the ordained minister of Word and Sacrament – is not always available. That reality, difficult as it is, does not preclude the congregation meeting on the Lord’s Day, hearing the Word proclaimed through Scripture, offering worship, singing the hymns of faith, and praying together –nor does it preclude the sharing and fellowship with one another which Lutherans, in the Smalcald Articles, call the “mutual conversation and consolation of the brethren.” In six sessions, this workshop aims to give interested lay persons the opportunity to explore worship planning, leadership, and resources. Additionally, one session will explore worship planning when preparing for a Sunday morning with a supply pastor. Participants will learn about forms of worship which layfolk may officiate (i.e. The Service of the Word, Matins, Vespers, the Ante-Communion). Participants will have opportunities to practice officiating and build a collection of planning resources.
