- **Event Description**: Rickey’s journey has not been an easy one. Since 2013, he has been battling a multitude of serious health issues — challenges that have nearly taken him from us twice. A lifelong member of Eastern Passage, Rickey is a proud father to two incredible sons and a devoted husband who has always put his family first.

Over the past several months, his already fragile health has taken an alarming turn. What began as uncontrollable leg shaking has evolved into the most difficult battle we have ever faced. Following severe complications from a surgery in 2013, Rickey has lived with debilitating, chronic pain for years — pain that has only worsened with time. A massive heart attack a few years ago further changed the course of his health, and since then, things have never truly been the same.

This past year brought the most concerning changes. Rickey did not have a family doctor for some time, but thanks to his incredible pain specialist, someone finally saw just how quickly things were declining. He recognized the changes immediately, trusted my nursing instincts, and acted without hesitation.

What started as leg tremors progressed into frequent and dangerous falls, loss of fine motor skills, and changes in his speech. Determined to find answers, his specialist pushed tirelessly to get multiple MRIs completed as quickly as possible. Within just two months, Rickey underwent a series of three MRIs.

Then came the call that changed everything — a tumor had been found in the fourth ventricle of his brain.

As a nurse, I understood the gravity of what that could mean. We hoped it would explain everything — that there was a clear cause and, hopefully, a path forward. But after emergency visits, consultations, and extensive review by neurology and neurosurgery teams, we were told something unexpected: the tumor does not appear to account for the severity of Rickey’s symptoms.

From there, the focus shifted to investigating possible neurodegenerative muscular disorders.

Since then, Rickey has undergone additional MRIs, which revealed multiple spinal disc herniations, degenerative disc disease, and even a partially broken hip. Still, the tumor remains inoperable. Due to the life-threatening complications he experienced during surgery in 2013, Rickey is considered extremely high-risk for any surgical intervention. Given the tumor’s location and his existing health concerns, surgery is not considered a safe option.

While we wait for answers, Rickey’s condition continues to decline.

He can no longer function safely on his own. Simple daily tasks have become overwhelming, and his mobility is severely compromised. He is falling frequently, and each fall carries the risk of serious injury.

Our neurologist, who had seen Rickey just two months prior, was alarmed to observe what he described as a “40% decline” in his health in such a short time. Despite multiple rounds of bloodwork, we still do not have clear answers.

At our most recent appointment — a second opinion with another neurologist — the tone shifted. The focus moved away from hope for improvement and toward ensuring Rickey’s comfort and safety. When asked directly, they shared their concern that this could be ALS. However, this cannot be confirmed without further testing, including a spinal tap, additional MRIs, bloodwork, and nerve conduction studies — all of which we are currently waiting on.

As we wait, Rickey continues to lose more of himself. His quality of life is fading more each day.

At home, the challenges are constant. Our house is older and not designed for someone with severe mobility limitations. Necessary adaptations and repairs have been put off over the years due to ongoing medical struggles. Financially, we are stretched beyond our limits. I have had to step away from work due to my own health issues and have become Rickey’s full-time caregiver, while also caring for our two sons — one of whom lives with Type 1 diabetes.

To say this has been overwhelming would be an understatement.

The emotional toll on our family has been profound. Our sons are watching their strong, independent father — a once active, devoted soccer dad who rarely missed a game — slowly lose his independence and become confined by his own body. He hasn’t been able to watch them play in years due to his limited mobility and the constant risk of falling.

Rickey now avoids movement out of fear. If he makes it through a day without falling, it is only because he has done almost nothing at all. Our boys have had to help lift him from the floor more than once — something no child should have to experience, no matter how strong or willing they are.

The road ahead is filled with uncertainty. What we do know is that we need help.

As difficult as it is to ask — especially as a healthcare provider and caregiver — our desire to give Rickey some quality of life outweighs any hesitation. We want to make our home safe and accessible. We need proper mobility aids to prevent further falls and injuries. We want to give him the dignity, comfort, and moments of joy he deserves.

More than anything, we want him to be able to be present with his family — to share in moments, to feel included, and maybe, one day, to sit on the sidelines and watch his two favorite soccer players do what they love.

Any support, whether through donation or sharing our story, means more to us than words can express.

Thank you for taking the time to read Rickey’s story, and for standing with our family during the most difficult chapter of our lives.
