Experience the local bumblebees after some of their winter hibernations. Nikki will give expert advice on identifying the various species seen on our walk route along the Ridgeway path, Southmere Lake and the Old Golf Course, starting and ending outside the Lakeside Centre (Bow Arts), Bazalgette, Road, SE2 9AN.
There will be nets and temporary catching pots available to help with close-up identification, and a printed sheet for each participant will be available showing the Bumblebees we may experience along the way.
Walk Practicalities
The walk will go ahead in wet and windy weather although we may experience less bees under such conditions, it will be cancelled if an extreme weather warning. Please wear appropriate clothing and footwear as the old golf course can be especially muddy after rain, although here’s to the sun shining throughout.
The walk will have some uneven surfaces, but it is mainly pavement and grass with some inclines to reach the Ridgeway path and a kissing gate to access the old golf course.
W/C and food/drink available at the Lakeside Café near the walk start/end.
All under 18’s must be accompanied by an adult. Please inform the walk leaders before the event if you are allergic to bee or wasp stings. Any participant who is allergic will need to bring with them an epi pen and is attending at their own risk.
The second of two nature walks with J D Swann and the Bumblebee Conservation Trust, considering the birds and the bees along the Ridgeway path on the border of the London Borough’s of Greenwich and Bexley.
Photographs and film will be taken during the session, please inform the walk leader if you do not wish to be in the picture, all participants will be asked to fill in an online photo permission form.
The Bumblebee Conservation Trust are the only charity dedicated to the conservation of bumblebees. The walk will continue their work to engage and inspire Thamesmead communities with their natural environment and will also support two of the charities four main aims including 1 Enhance the understanding of bumblebee ecology and conservation and 3 Inspire and enable a diverse range of people to take action for bumblebees. Bumblebee Conservation Trust have been working in partnership with North West Kent Countryside Partnership, University of East London, Ridgeway Users Group and Bow Arts on the Thamesmead Pollinator Corridor project. Together they are delivering a range of practical conservation activities and public engagement events to connect the communities of Thamesmead with their local pollinators and to create a pollinator habitat corridor focussed on the Ridgeway. In particular, the project aims to highlight the conservation of the rare Shrill Carder Bumblebee which is found in the Thamesmead area. https://www.bumblebeeconservation.org/
