Eastbourne sees a 93% solar eclipse on the day of the Total Solar Eclipse that is seen by Greenland, Iceland, Spain and the Balearics.

An eclipse happens when the Moon passes in front of the Sun from our point of view. By chance the Moon is 400 times smaller than the Sun but is 400 times closer so they are similar in angular size - causing Total Solar Eclipses and sometimes Annular Solar Eclipses when the Moon is slightly further away in its slightly elliptical orbit c.f. Super-Moon and Mini-Moon. They do not happen every New Moon because the orbit of the Moon is slightly askew from the solar plane.

It is low in the west with a total time of about 2 hours with maximum after about 1hr i.e. about 7pm. The best view point will be high up on Beachy Head so you get a low horizon. It lasts from about 6pm to 8pm.

The society will be holding a public observing session at  Beachy Head Car Park using correctly protected telescopes, smart scopes and electronic viewing aids. We will have eclipse glasses available for personal safe viewing.

WARNING: NEVER look at the Sun with a telescope or binoculars (or even your eye) without the correct certified solar filtration. Note that this is also the case for ANY partial eclipse.

NOTE: If it is raining or totally cloudy the event will not go ahead because we will not see anything.
