“What Hospital Engineers Must Know About Legionella Prevention”

About this Event

“What Hospital Engineers Must Know About Legionella Prevention”

You have detected Legionella pneumophila in your piping system. What do you do next?

It is imperative that the limitations of each possible treatment technology are well understood before facility implementation. Failure to identify the most appropriate technology for a particular facility could result in significant and unnecessary costs.

Purpose:

Hospitals serve highly vulnerable populations, making proactive Legionella prevention essential. Engineering teams play a critical role in maintaining safe water systems that limit bacterial growth and protect patients, visitors, and staff.

Bullet points:

  • "If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles." Sun Tzu
  • What makes Legionella pneumophila so dangerous in the human body? How does it attack our cells? How do we fight back?
  • There are so many technologies, which ones are right for my Site? Should we try UV light? Maybe copper-silver ionization, ozone, or even thermal eradication? How about monochloramine? Chlorine or chlorine dioxide? Should we combine applications?
  • What are the pros and cons of each technology? What are the long-term costs for each technology? What are the latest technological developments from Europe and Asia?
  • What about other Hospital-Acquired Infections? Should you consider defending against other nosocomial infections such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa?
  • Is your Water Management Plan up to date?

Learning Objectives:

  • Better understanding of the virulence of Legionellosis.
  • Engineering Controls (summary of the currently available treatment technologies, including the latest developments from Europe and Asia).
  • Comparative system maintenance costs and stagnation prevention.
  • Water Management Program (WMP) Requirements.
  • Control Testing and Response.
