Hagaman Library Contemporary Book Club: "James" by Percival Everett

Hagaman's Contemporary Book Club will again meet on Monday, August 18th at 3pm to discuss their latest selection, the Pulitzer Prize- winning novel "James" by Percival Everett. "James" by Percival Everett retells "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" from the perspective of Jim, the enslaved man, giving him a full inner life, intelligence, and agency. Rather than a sidekick, Jim becomes the moral and narrative center of the story, navigating a racist world with sharp wit and quiet resistance. Everett uses this shift to challenge the original novel’s portrayal of race, power, and voice, offering a powerful commentary on how stories are told, and who gets to tell them.
