- **Event Description**: Some of you in the Cove area may be familiar with the name Rick Boston from his years writing for the Morrisons Cove Herald. A job which allowed him the opportunity to be involved with the community and really help highlight how this community is truly an amazing one to be apart of. His involvement did not start and end with writing an article. Along the way he got to know members of the community personally, helping out with events, and building relationships. From the local fire departments, law enforcement, and local businesses to individuals who just live in the community. While he did step away from writing for the Herald to pursue a career working with our State Representative, he still holds this community very close to his heart. 

On Friday, January 16, 2026, Rick was diagnosed with Myelofibroses. A rare blood cancer that causes scarring in the bone marrow, making it hard for the bone marrow to make healthy blood cells. Unfortunately, this was not caught early and he is at the intermediate-high risk stage. While he will be undergoing treatments, it cannot be cured. He has started treatments with a costly medication called Jakafi, as well as some others to help manage symptoms. He has also been referred to the Mario Lemieux Center for Blood Cancers after being told that the best course of action will be a Bone Marrow Transplant. On top of this, Rick is receiving infusions for anemia, and managing his Chron’s disease which he was diagnosed with 20 years ago. 

Rick is a dedicated father of 3, and proud “PopPop” of two grandsons. While two of his children are grown, he is raising his 14 year old daughter, Olivia, on his own on one household income. Rick is the only parent Olivia has and life has not always led them down the easiest path, so we want to help lighten some financial burden between medical expenses for treatments and hospital stays, expenses from traveling back and forth to Pittsburgh, and loss of income from taking time off of work for his treatments and bone marrow transplant. We will be holding a Chicken BBQ Dinner and Basket Raffle to help raise money that can ultimately help make financial stress one less thing to worry about. 

The basket raffle will be held at Freedom Township Firehall on Saturday May 9th 2026 at from 11 AM - 4 PM. BBQ Chicken Dinner tickets will be available for purchase for $12 and basket raffle tickets can be purchased at the event for $5 per sheet or 5 sheets for $20.
