Adding colour to an image is a core process of picture-making and a significant asset in the skill set of an intaglio printmaker. Multi-plate methods are the most expansive colour technique that can be applied to etching, because when overlaying colour from more than one plate complex combinations can be developed. This provides a point of distinction with other colour intaglio processes. The workshop will provide the opportunity for participants to make a colour etching using zinc plates and nitric acid that combine the methods of line, tone and texture. In so doing you’ll get some informed insights into how to manage the process relative to your creative intensions. Approaches to image development, plate construction, and colour proofing for editioning will be discussed and demonstrated. In considering attending this workshop you should have some knowledge of printmaking, and in particular etching with metal plates but all levels of experience are welcome, however some preparation is required.
Participants are asked to bring some ideas for a 3-plate image. Initially your plans should involve drawings that consider the use of 3 colours but once we start working the idea can grow and develop. If you already have some zinc plates, they must be the same size and thickness. But if you don’t, etching plates will be supplied to the format of 20 x 16cm. Any preparation drawing should accommodate that format size. Technical videos will be available so bring a thumb drive to the workshop.
