Class Description
New to gardening in Eagle County—or gardening at all? Intro to Gardening – Landscape is a foundational class designed to help brand new gardeners and those new to the area understand how to create healthy, resilient landscapes in our unique mountain environment. This class covers the core basics of landscape gardening, with a strong focus on working with local conditions instead of fighting them. We’ll start with soil—what types of soil are common in our area, why soil health matters, and how compost and mulch play very different (and equally important) roles in the garden.
You’ll learn the difference between annuals and perennials, how to decide which makes sense for your space and goals, and how to approach planting with long-term success in mind. We’ll also introduce waterwise gardening principles, including how to choose plants that need less water, how to water effectively, and why smart plant selection is the easiest way to save water without sacrificing beauty. This class also touches on basic garden design concepts—how to think about layout, plant placement, and flow so your landscape is functional, attractive, and manageable.
We’ll talk through planting basics, nutrient needs, and how to avoid common beginner mistakes that lead to frustration or wasted effort. Education comes first, with approachable explanations and practical guidance you can apply immediately. By the end of the class, you’ll have a clearer understanding of how landscapes work in Eagle County and the confidence to start making thoughtful, sustainable gardening choices. This class is your starting point for building a landscape that’s beautiful, functional, and suited to our mountain climate.
