- **Event Description**: Join us under a blanket of stars in Joshua Tree National Park — an International Dark Sky Park — for an astronomy experience unlike any other. Learn about what makes these skies so special and how you can help protect them from threats like light pollution. Then, view these wonders up close and personal through the telescopes in the park. This outdoor experience takes place at Cap Rock in Joshua Tree National Park. Entry to Joshua Tree National Park is not included in the cost of enrollment. Visit recreation.gov or a visitor center to purchase your pass ahead of time. No meals are provided. Desert Institute will provide a telescope to view the stars and planets. This class is leisurely. It requires less than 2 miles of walking with shade, seating, consistent terrain, and little to no elevation gain. Meet Your Instructor! John Watkins holds a Ph.D. in Physics and began his career at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, contributing to the historic Voyager 1 and 2 missions. This launched a 30+ year career in aerospace, during which he worked on groundbreaking projects including the NASA Zero-Gravity aircraft, the National Ignition Facility (NIF) — the world’s largest fusion research laser — and experiments involving materials cooled to near absolute zero. Now a proud resident of Joshua Tree, John teaches physics and astronomy at Copper Mountain College. He continues to explore the cosmos from his own backyard, where he enjoys stargazing under some of the clearest night skies in the country. Equipment list: A minimum of 2 to 3 liters of water, food and snacks, closed-toe athletic shoes or hiking boots — no sandals are permitted, including hiking sandals, warm layers for cool evening temperatures, daypack to carry equipment and personal items, camp chair, red headlamp.
