Novak is a coastal ecologist and a Research Assistant Professor at Boston University, and did her undergraduate studies at the University of Virginia. She then earned her Masters degree from the University of Rhode Island and a doctorate from the University of New Hampshire in Natural Resources and Earth Sciences/Oceanography. Her research focuses on the structure, function and resilience of coastal systems, particularly seagrass ecosystems. A particular area of interest is human- and climate change-induced effects on eelgrasses, its response to these stressors as well as monitoring programs and approaches to restoration. She has over 29 scholarly publications and many professional presentations.
