This month, Queensland's leading cemetery historian Tracey Olivieri presents, 'The Language of Stone: Decoding Cemetery Iconography'.

Our cemeteries contain some of our most enigmatic, awe-inspiring and artistic symbols. Echoes of ancient pagan traditions, classical Greek and Roman influences, and enduring expressions of hope, love and sorrow can often be found carved into the monuments of historic burial grounds.

The Victorians had a deep appreciation for symbolism, and gravestones provided the perfect canvas for this rich visual language. Every broken column, clasped hand, anchor and angel had a story to tell, conveying messages about faith, loss, remembrance and the lives of those commemorated.

By understanding these symbols, we can unlock a deeper appreciation of the people they memorialise and the beliefs, customs and values of the communities that created them. Discover the meanings behind some of the most common and unusual cemetery motifs, and hear the stories of the talented monumental stonemasons whose remarkable craftsmanship helped shape Queensland's historic cemeteries. Their artistry and enduring legacy remain etched in stone for all who know how to read them.

The talk starts at 10.00 am, with tea, coffee and nibbles available to follow. Please meet near the centre of the cemetery at the office and green shed, and bring a chair or blanket to sit on and morning snacks.
