This workshop is designed for those who wish to master the unique challenges of gardening in the forest understory, where the growing season is short and the ecological relationships are ancient. We will explore the "life in the fast lane" strategy of ephemeral species—how they utilize a tiny window of sunlight to bloom, entice specialized pollinators through scent and deception, and partner with local ant colonies for seed dispersal. Beyond their beauty, we will address the urgent conservation needs of these slow-growing treasures and the ethics of building "living gene banks" in our own backyards. From the mechanics of complex seed dormancy to the art of designing multi-layered shade guilds, this session provides the botanical foundation needed to transform a shaded corner into a thriving, self-sustaining woodland refuge. Whether you consider yourself a beginner or an expert when it comes to native Ontario plants, this workshop is perfect for all who are interested in Ontario's native species.

We have lots of Jack in the Pulpit, Bloodroot, May Apple, and Trillium this year, as well as other woodland plants for sale. If interested in pick ups, you can pre-order or shop at nursery (this is part of our 11-5 Saturday sale).
