Supported by PHE

PHE Centres are the front door for most of PHE’s local services across health improvement, healthcare public health and health protection and support action by local government and the NHS.   The centres ensure localities are supported to deliver their health and wellbeing strategies to ensure better health outcomes for their local populations.

What Public Health England wants to achieve with Local Maternity Systems:

To embed a whole-systems approach to prevention within service offer from preconception to 6-8 weeks

To understand local needs such as population profile and deprivation using local data profiling tools on www.fingertips.co.uk and to access resources to undertake a JSNA for the perinatal period

To review local antenatal and postnatal prevention and public health services and support local Health and Wellbeing plans to reflect outcomes of the review

To access data, evidence and best practice to support service design

To collaborate across organisational boundaries to commission a care pathway that includes delivery of key public health services within community hubs

To support maternity services to join up with wider prevention and community based services e.g. of health promotion, family planning, sexual health, reducing obesity, smoking cessation and breastfeeding

To support provision of early, universal access to information for health issues such as smoking, obesity and poor mental health
