Join Durham University Chamber Choir on a profound journey from prayer to deliverance, bringing togethe the stunning passion of Łukaszewski’s Lamentations with Howells’ awe-inspiring Requiem in Durham’s landmark venue, the Chapter House of the Cathedral.
Our Epiphany concert takes the listener on a profound journey from intense passion and lament through to the delivery of content in a programme of contemporary compositions by English, French and Polish composers.
The evening opens with Francis Poulenc’s “Four motets for a time of Penitence”, mixing reflection with sharp, dissonant melodies. In his 3-part “Lamentations”, Paveł Lukaszewski set to the texts of the Lamentations from the Bible. Łukaszewski contrasts moments of quiet with sharp, striking harmonies to enhance the emotional vigour of the Crucifixion.
In its second half, the choir sings Howells’ “Requiem”, a unique but ever-powerful setting of the mass with interspersions of poignant psalms to enhance its message. The listener is left with the ethereal movement, “I Heard A Voice from Heaven” which transports the listener with its voice of beauty.
