About the event

Going Back Brockens: Artists' Talk & Discussion
The People's Bookshop is delighted to welcome Narbi Price and Mark Hudson talking about their new exhibition, Going Back Brockens: Monuments and Rhetoric After the Miners' Strike.

>> Doors open at 18:30, talk starts at 19:00.

Going Back Brockens is a major new exhibition exploring the 1984 miners strike and its legacy in County Durham 40 years on. It consists of 40 paintings made by Narbi Price of locations across the county linked to the mining industry as they are now, and a soundscape constructed by Mark Hudson from his interviews with residents of Horden, once Europe’s most productive pit, now a ‘left behind’ community, made in 1991-1992 when memories of the strike were still raw in the village.

Tickets are £5 and include drinks & nibbles.

More info

This event offers a chance to hear more about the process behind the work, the collaboration between artist and writer, and the ambition behind creating 40 new paintings paired with an immersive sound installation drawn from archival interviews for Mark's book Coming Back Brockens: A Year in a Mining Village.

📖 👉 It will also delve further into the book, exploring its impact when first released and reflecting back on the work, 30 years after it was first published.

Narbi & Mark will talk about the curatorial ambition behind GOING BACK BROCKENS and the challenges of presenting the work across County Durham in unconventional spaces.

Marking 40 years since the end of the miners’ strike, the exhibition sees Mark and Narbi explore the post-strike landscape of County Durham through a combination of sound and paintings which explores not only what was lost, but what remains, what has changed, and how people continue to define their places and memories decades after the last coal was mined.

Mark Hudson’s sound installations revisit interviews he conducted with the people of Horden and Easington in 1991–92, which formed the basis of his book. These excerpts - many focused on the still-raw memory of the 1984–85 Miners’ Strike - are paired with a new body of work by Narbi Price: 40 paintings depicting landscapes across County Durham as they appear today, forty years after the strike and the decline of the region’s defining industry.

So far it has been shown in a warehouse in Bishop Auckland, in a marquee at Durham Miners Gala and it will next be seen in a church in Horden on August 22.
