As the route ascends, there are excellent views back towards Durham Cathedral before continuing through peaceful woodland to the Durham Botanic Garden.The return walk follows the Houghall Discovery Trail, passing through woodland and along the route of a former railway before reaching the River Wear. The route continues beneath Shincliffe Bridge and past Maiden Castle, home to Durham University Boat Club, before crossing the river and following riverside paths back towards the city.After crossing Baths Bridge, the walk returns to the Delta Hotels Durham Royal County, completing a varied route that combines woodland trails, riverside scenery and some of Durham's most attractive natural and historic landscapes.To ensure a smooth pace and the best experience for all participants, we kindly ask that our hikes remain pet-free and child-free.
