The ride will be completed at a relaxed pace, allowing time for tea and lunch stops, photography, nature viewing and short walks to explore features along the way. If the weather and water conditions are suitable, there may also be an opportunity for a swim.🚴 Trail’s End Bike Hotel — StartThe ride begins at Trail’s End Bike Hotel in Grabouw, approximately one hour from Cape Town. From here, we follow established mountain-bike trails towards Eikenhof Dam.💧 Eikenhof Dam and Mountain ViewsThe route continues along the side of Eikenhof Dam, with views towards the Hottentots Holland, Nuweberg and Groenland mountain ranges. The surrounding slopes form part of the Cape Fold Belt and support extensive areas of mountain fynbos.🌳 Keeroms River Forest — Tea StopOur first break will be beside a pocket of indigenous riverine forest near the point where the Keeroms River enters Eikenhof Dam. The shaded setting provides a suitable place for tea before we continue deeper into the trail network.🌲 Pine Forest and Wesselsgat RiverFrom the forest, the route passes through a pine plantation and crosses the Wesselsgat River. This section provides a contrast between plantation tracks, river corridors and the open fynbos slopes surrounding the dam.💦 Curtain Falls — Lunch StopOur lunch stop will be at the foot of Curtain Falls, a waterfall situated along the network of fynbos and waterfall trails near Eikenhof Dam and the Wesselsgat River. The flow of the waterfall depends on recent rainfall, but the surrounding sandstone formations and sheltered setting make it a worthwhile stop throughout the year. Time will be allowed to rest, explore the immediate area and take photographs.🪨 Sandstone Rock FormationsAfter lunch, the route climbs towards an area of exposed sandstone formations. The underlying rock belongs to the Table Mountain Group and consists mainly of hard, quartz-rich sandstone. Over long periods, natural joints and fractures allowed water, wind and temperature changes to weather the rock. Softer and more fractured sections gradually eroded, leaving behind resistant walls, fins, blocks and small tors. Their pale colour, angular shapes and limited vegetation sometimes give this landscape a Mars-like appearance.Although these rocks are sometimes described casually as quartzite, hard quartz-rich sandstone is the more appropriate general description unless laboratory analysis confirms that the rock has been metamorphosed into true quartzite. We will park the bikes at selected points and take short walks among the formations, allowing time to examine the weathered surfaces, narrow openings and unusual shapes more closely.🌿 Fynbos Along the RouteThe ride passes through mountain fynbos associated with the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve, an important part of the Cape Floristic Region. Seasonal flowering varies according to rainfall, fire history and the time of year, but the route offers regular opportunities to observe restios, proteas, ericas and other fynbos plants.Depending on the season, riders may encounter:· Proteas and other Proteaceae· Ericas· Restios· Bulbs and geophytes· Daisies and seasonal flowering plants· Shrubs adapted to nutrient-poor sandstone soilsStops along the route provide opportunities to observe how geology, water, fire, altitude, drainage, and soil influence the distribution of different plant communities.🚴 Return to Trail’s EndAfter exploring the rock formations, we begin the return ride to Trail’s End Bike Hotel. The final section completes a varied circular journey through dam-side scenery, river crossings, forest, waterfalls, sandstone formations and fynbos. This tour combines pedal-assist mountain biking with short walks and nature stops, making it an opportunity to explore parts of the Elgin landscape that are easily missed when travelling through the area by vehicle.✨ Route Highlights· Electric mountain biking through the Elgin Valley· Views across Eikenhof Dam and the surrounding mountains· Tea beside the Keeroms River forest· Pine-forest riding and the Wesselsgat River crossing· Lunch at Curtain Falls· Short walks among weathered sandstone formations· Seasonal fynbos flowers and mountain scenery· A possible swim, depending on weather and water conditions#########################⚡🚴‍♂️ WHAT ARE E‑BIKES 🌿#########################Here’s a link to the types of bikes we’ll be riding on the day:👉 E‑Bike Cape Town - https://e-motion.fun/Electric bikes aren’t motorbikes 🏍️ or mopeds 🛵. They provide pedal‑assist power on demand, adjusting to your effort and pace.👉 Pedal harder 💪 — less battery power 🔋 is used. 👉 Ease off 🐢 — the motor adds assistance 🚀. 👉 Most e‑bikes can boost your pedalling by up to 150% ⚡ with each stroke. You’ll still spend time in the saddle 🪑, but the ride is smoother and easier. Importantly, you don’t need to be highly experienced or super‑fit to enjoy our tours.🚴‍♀️ We ride premium, all‑terrain fat‑tire e‑bikes chosen for coastal sand and gravel fynbos trails. The fleet features step‑through frames for comfort, 4‑inch puncture‑resistant tires, and reliable pedal assist that makes hills and headwinds effortless.✨ It’s all the thrills without the strain — gliding past conventional bikes, climbing with ease, and riding in comfort. With our knowledgeable guide, these tours rank among the most engaging cycling experiences in Cape Town. 🌍🌿#########################🚐 Wherever possible we will share the Transport in getting there#########################📋 Please read the event instructions in full, as they contain all the essential details for the hike or activity—including the meeting time, what to bring, fitness requirements, and the starting point.#########################💪 LEVEL OF FITNESS#########################@ — The event on Saturday, 3rd of October 2026 will be suitable for all levels of fitness, and no previous experience is required.@ — You will, however, need to be able to ride a bicycle 🚴‍♂️.#########################🗺️ DIRECTIONS FROM CAPE TOWN#########################🚗 Driving Directions from Cape Town City Centre:Take N2 East from Cape Town (to Garden Route) over Sir Lowery's Pass (First Mountain Range)From the top of the pass continue about 8 Km to Orchard Farm Stall (which has large sign on roof).
