Sleep Apnea, Arrhythmias and Sudden Cardiac death

DVC Guest Lecture by Professor Virend Somers. Virend K. Somers is a cardiologist in the Department of Cardiovascular Diseases at Mayo Clinic in Rochester. He is
recognized with the distinction of a named Mayo professorship, the Alice Sheets Marriott Professorship. Dr. Somers
earned the MBChB degree at the University of Natal in South Africa. He received a Nuffield Dominions Scholarship
to Oxford University where he obtained his Doctor of Philosophy degree. He then completed a residency in internal
medicine and a cardiology fellowship at the University of Iowa. His translational research program focuses on an
integrated approach to cardiometabolic control and vascular and adipocyte biology, in normal and disordered sleep.
His program is funded by 3 NIH RO1 grants as well as grants from the AHA. His H-index is 111 with >65,000 citations.
