Ocean's Economy Workshop - 28 February 2019

KwaZulu-Natal is South Africa’s second-largest economy, contributing on average a fifth of South Africa’s gross domestic product (GDP) and is strategically positioned being home to two of Africa’s busiest and largest ports, Durban and Richards Bay.These two ports handle 78% of South Africa’s cargo tonnage, so KwaZulu-Natal as a province is very reliant economically on the maritime industry. Additionally, KwaZulu-Natal has the third highest export propensity and the second highest level of industrialisation in the country. Nearly a third of South Africa’s manufactured exports produced in the province in key industrial and manufacturing zones located throughout the province. There exists a massive opportunity across the value chain of the ocean’s economy to contribute significantly to the inclusive socio-economic development and sustainability of eThekwini and the Province at large. The purpose of this workshop is to create access to opportunities for the youth and people from previously disadvantaged communities in order to create a sustainable and inclusive economy and society.
