A Half-Day Meditation Retreat with Juliana Sloane

Sunday, July 12 from 11:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m. IN PERSON

Much of modern life trains us to focus narrowly: on the next task, the next notification, the next problem to solve. While this capacity can be useful, it can also leave us feeling contracted, overwhelmed and disconnected from a deeper sense of ease and perspective. Meditation offers another possibility: the opportunity to step out of urgency and reconnect with spacious awareness.

During this half-day retreat, we will explore mindfulness and meditation practices that help us broaden the field of awareness and create inner space amidst the pressures of daily life. Drawing on both Buddhist contemplative traditions and modern neuroscience, we will learn practices that support the nervous system in shifting from states of contraction, vigilance and urgency toward greater openness, creativity and ease. As our awareness expands, we often discover greater access to insight, resilience and wise action.

Through guided sitting and walking meditation, Dharma reflections and connection in community, we will investigate what becomes possible when we learn to rest in a wider, more receptive awareness rather than continually organizing our attention around what feels most immediate or demanding. As we do, greater ease and inner safety unfolds.

Rooted in Buddhist meditation practices, this retreat invites us to rediscover the restorative power of spacious presence, stillness and embodied awareness. The day will unfold within a container of partial silence supported by guided practices, Dharma teachings and opportunities for shared reflection.

No previous meditation experience is needed.

COST: The Dharma Center operates on the gift economy and the cost of this offering is on a two-part sliding scale. The fee that you offer through the registration system ($36, $48, $60, or $72 or scholarship options of $18 or $0) supports our nonprofit, which pays the costs of the building, utilities, website, administration, etc.

In keeping with our 2,600-year-old tradition, the teacher of the retreat is not compensated but rather shares the teachings freely. In turn, you are invited into the practice of dana, or generosity, a gift economy system that has been alive since the time of the Buddha. You are invited to make a donation to support the teacher in continuing their valuable work. Donations in any amount whatsoever are gratefully received, and the practice of generosity is always elective.

DATE: Sunday, July 12th from 11:00 am to 3:30 p.m.

LOCATION: Durango Dharma Center, 1800 East Third Avenue, Suite 109 in Durango

QUESTIONS: If you have questions, please reach out to the registrar, Emily, at registrar3@durangodharma.org or 970-426-8983.

ABOUT THE TEACHER: Juliana first encountered the Dharma as a teenager, along with many of the beauties and challenges of practice. This led her to academic study of religion and gender, and ultimately, to pursue deeper practice and training in the Dharma. Over the years, Juliana has participated in Buddhist Chaplaincy training with the Sati Center, spent many years teaching with Spirit Rock Meditation Center’s Family Program, and co-founded a weekly sitting group for those who identify as women. Juliana participated in the sixth iteration of Spirit Rock’s Community Dharma Leader Program in 2019 and completed this training with an 11-month Dharma Mentoring Program with Erin Treat and Pamela Weiss. Today, Juliana lives in Santa Fe, NM and works one-on-one with individuals as Dharma mentor, hypnotherapist and coach.
