Sheila’s Island – Synopsis
‘SHEILA!!! ROCKS!!!’
Pennine Mineral Water Ltd.'s annual outward-bound team building weekend goes disastrously wrong leaving team captain, Sheila and her 3 teammates, Denise, Fay and Julie unwittingly stranded on an island in the Lake District.
Sheila’s Island is a dark comedy by Tim Firth (author of Calendar Girls) a female-led reimagining of his earlier play Neville’s Island. After a navigational error, tensions rise as the four women struggle with the elements, their own insecurities, and each other. What begins as a corporate bonding exercise quickly turns into a battle for survival—both physically and emotionally.
Questions are asked; truths are told; dirty washing is aired.

Characters
1. Sheila – The well-meaning but ineffective team leader. Optimistic and eager to take charge, but lacks the authority or decisiveness to truly lead. As tensions rise, she struggles to maintain control and keep spirits high.
2. Denise – A cynical and sharp-witted woman who is deeply skeptical of Sheila’s leadership. Practical and assertive, but also impatient and quick to criticize. She often takes on the role of the realist, cutting through the nonsense.
3. Fay – Quiet, highly-strung, and deeply religious. She often seems detached or overly concerned with morality and propriety, but harbors deep personal struggles. Her faith becomes both a comfort and a source of conflict among the group.
4. Julie – The joker of the group, using humor to deflect tension and lighten the mood. She is friendly and easygoing but can also be insensitive. As the situation worsens, her humor masks deeper insecurities.

Audition Notes

All female cast, with flexibility on age ranges
All cast will need to be comfortable with being soaking wet clothed and then getting changed/undressed on stage, all with modesty being relatively protected
• Sheila – An actor with strong comedic timing who can balance Sheila’s enthusiasm with underlying vulnerability. She should be likable but increasingly exasperated.
• Denise – Needs a strong presence and dry delivery. An actor who can deliver sarcastic lines with natural wit but also show underlying frustration and depth.
• Fay – Requires subtle intensity. An actor who can convey nervous energy, religious conviction, and internal conflict without overplaying it.
• Julie – Needs excellent comedic instincts. Someone who can deliver humor effortlessly while hinting at deeper emotional layers.

Please note:
• Rehearsals take place every Monday, Wednesday and Friday evening at the theatre from 7:45pm, unless you are notified by of any variances by the director

• You may be required to provide small props or costumes at your directors' request, but this will be discussed in advance.
