CPD: Home is where the Heart is - Retrofit Planning with People at Heart
This CPD session focuses on developing retrofit plans that prioritise occupant comfort and wellbeing – not simply carbon reduction. Going beyond technical considerations, it explores the meaning of home, adaptability to changing circumstances, and how retrofit can support autonomy, decision-making, and a sense of control within home environment.
Participants will reflect on why engaging directly with occupants is essential: listening and dialogue empower people, shape behavioural change, and create solutions that truly work for those who live in them. We will consider questions such as: Who makes decisions in the household? Who spends the most time at home? How do family, work, and daily life shape the use of domestic space?
Drawing on the experience of a cross-sectoral team, the session will guide participants through the process of creating an occupant-focused retrofit questionnaire. Through interactive workshop we will explore how to integrate technical, environmental, health, and wellbeing outcomes – extending beyond the home to the neighbourhood scale and understanding what drives decisions around retrofit of homes.
