- **Event Description**: The July Concert at the DJC welcomes the first international musicians to the Hanover Stage in 2026. The Andy Sugg Group features musicians from across Australia and New Zealand, including two of the best saxophonists from this corner of the globe. The Melbourne–based group explores post-Trane improvisation in original compositions written for a small group setting. Sugg (tenor sax, Melbourne) will lead his group across an eclectic range of compositional influences, including contemporary jazz, funk, R&B and avant-pop. Joining him are Roger Manins (tenor sax, Auckland), Umar Zakaria (bass, Melbourne), Bill Martin (piano, Dunedin), and Mark Lockett (drums, Wellington).

Andy Sugg is a leading Australian saxophonist, band leader and composer based in Melbourne. Describing his influences as “eclectic”, Sugg performs in a range of styles derived from jazz and other contemporary music. He founded The Andy Sugg Group in the 90’s, which has become a mainstay. Sugg describes the group as “While firmly grounded in its stylistic time and place, the Andy Sugg Group plays music that has left home. It’s music in the moment, played by highly articulate musicians with something to say both as soloists and as members of a collective.” Sugg also heads another project, TTTenor, featuring hard-blowing post-Trane solos and collective improvisation. TTTenor currently features a front line of Andy, Roger Manins and John Mackey. Sugg is also a noted musicologist, having written for The Times Literary Supplement (London) and the International Society for Jazz Research (Graz). He has lectured at Centro Didattico Produzione Musica (Milan), the Manhattan School of Music (New York), and the World Saxophone Congress (Strasbourg, France). Sugg is somewhat of an expert on all things Trane, having written a book, The Influence of John Coltrane on Improvising Saxophonists (Edwin Mellen Press: New York and Wales) and was a consultant for Chasing Trane: The John Coltrane Documentary, the first feature-length film of its kind.

Roger Manins is an Auckland–based saxophonist and composer and is regarded as one of the leading Jazz saxophonists in the Southern Hemisphere. Born in New Zealand, Manins picked up the saxophone at age 12, before moving to Sydney in 1994 where he based himself for much of his musical career. After a three-year immersion in the New York scene, Manins returned to Sydney and began to emerge as a powerhouse in the Australian scene, winning the Australian International Jazz Awards title (saxophone) in 2002. He has appeared as a featured soloist on over 40 jazz albums and released several CDs as leader and in collaboration with others, including the critically acclaimed release ‘Two-out’ with pianist Mike Nock. In the last ten years he has featured on six albums that have won the TUI award for NZ Jazz Album of the Year; including The Thing, The Edge of Chaos, Dog, Panacea, Fearless Music and Resonator. In 2012 he was awarded an International Journalist Association ‘Jazz Hero Award’ dedicated to “activists, advocates, altruists, aiders and abettors of jazz who have had significant impact in their local communities.” Roger is a Senior lecturer at the University of Auckland where he teaches composition, arranging, improvisation, saxophone, and is the director of University of Auckland Big Band. He is also

co-founder and Artistic Director of Creative Jazz Club Aotearoa (CJC) which in the 14 years of operation has made a significant impact on the health and vitality of the New Zealand music scene.

Umar Zakaria is a Melbourne–based New Zealand double bassist and composer filled with hope for the future. His music unites diverse musical traditions to inspire communication and cooperation across boundaries. In 2018 he was named Best Jazz Artist by Recorded Music New Zealand for his album, Fearless Music (with Roger Manins). He has given performances across Europe, Asia and the USA alongside Myele Manzanza, Norio Maeda, Snorre Kirk, Fabia Mantwill and Ben Wendel among others. He is a student of legendary jazz bassists Cecil McBee and Lynn Seaton as well as NZ’s own Paul Dyne, and was awarded 2nd prize at the BASS2014 International Jazz Bass Competition. Having developed a reputation for emotionally stirring performances, Umar now seeks to share heartfelt original music with audiences across New Zealand and internationally, in order to spread a message of courage and unity through the powerful sound of the double bass.

Mark Lockett is a talented performer, composer and educator who has played with some of the finest jazz musicians on the world scene today. He has recorded and toured extensively throughout New York, Australia and New Zealand, Japan, and Singapore with his own trio, quartet and quintet ensembles. Lockett has performed alongside George Garzone, Michelle Nicole (Australian Jazz Vocalist of the Year 2001, 2003 and 2004), Alison Wedding (2004 Bell Award winner), Tim Hopkins (1993 Australian Jazz Award winner), Roger Manins (2002 Australian Jazz award winner), Joe Chindamo and Jamie Oehlers (2003 Montreux Jazz festival saxophone competition winner) to name a few. Mark’s release Sneaking Out After Midnight (2012, Rattle Records) includes a suite of original tunes. Recorded at Acoustic Recording in Brooklyn NY and features NY heavy weights Joel Frahm (Saxophone) and Orlando Le Fleming (Bass). “Mark Lockett shines in his new trio recording” - Mike Nock (March 2013).
