- **Event Description**: Remembering Mary Magdalene

The Feast of Saint Mary Magdalene is celebrated annually on July 22, particularly across the Catholic Church and various other Christian denominations. It honours her monumental legacy as the first witness to the Resurrection and the "Apostle to the Apostles".

On July 22nd Red Tent Otepoti Dunedin will facilitate an evening of “Remembering Mary Magdalene” where we will explore her origin story and the recent rise of interest in Mary Magdalene, especially within the women’s movement. That rise of interest reflects a positive trend in recentering both mysticism and feminine spirituality.

For female mystics and religious orders, Mary Magdalene was a symbol of intense divine love and equality in spiritual authority. Medieval legends tell of her spending decades living as a hermit in the wilderness of southern France, directly connecting the contemplative life with the physical landscape of Europe. There are stories of her travel to England where she has been a deeply revered figure in English spiritual and cultural history for over 1,400 years, appearing in early Anglo-Saxon devotions, medieval legends, and modern mystical traditions.

Mary Magdalene was highly honoured in England long before the Norman Conquest. In Arthurian and New Age traditions centered around Glastonbury, Mary Magdalene's story is heavily intertwined with the legend of the Holy Grail. Throughout the Middle Ages, English homilies and liturgical manuscripts such as the Blickling Homilies and Æthelwold’s Benedictional, extensively detailing her life as both a hermit and a devoted follower of Christ.

In more recent decades, Mary Magdalene’s mythology has been deeply popularised by the Grail lore present in British literature as well as a number of contemporary books such as the 1982 book “The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail” by Michael Baigent, Richard Leigh, and Henry Lincoln and “The Woman with the Alabaster Jar: Mary Magdalene and the Holy Grail”, written by Margaret Starbird in 1993.

Other books include; "Mary, Called Magdalene" by Margaret George, "The Secret Gospel of Mary Magdalene" by Michéle Roberts, and "Woman in Red: Magdalene Speaks" by Krishna Rose as well as the much acclaimed “Bloodline of the Holy Grail, The Magdalene Legacy”, and “The Grail Enigma” by Laurence Gardner.

There are also various Historical Non-Fiction books: "The Gospel of Mary of Magdala" by Karen L. King and “Mary Magdalen: Myth and Metaphor” by Susan Haskins which we can recommend.

We come together, for this Sistar Circle, for women who have or have had a womb, to Remember Mary Magdalene, to support each other to heal and empower through our feminine, the Mary Magdalene teachings, meditations, chants, and the remembering of the divine feminine highlighted through Mary Magdalene and the Divine Feminine Masters.
