The Hanover Hall Concert Series continues in June with Wellington guitarist Nick Granville leading a stellar quartet featuring the ever popular double bassist, Nick Tipping. Rounding out the quartet are a couple of mainstays at the DJC – our esteemed Director, Bill Martin, and master drummer, Carl Woodward. The quartet are set to take you through a varied and engaging evening of standards, Latin jams, and guitar classics with some of Nick Granville’s originals. 
Granville is a highly acclaimed jazz guitarist and has performed with huge names such as Dave Weckl, Eric Marienthal, Bob Mintzer and the likes of Ronan Keating, Delta Goodrem – and New Zealand’s own Sir Dave Dobbyn. Granville is a long-time collaborator of the Roger Fox Big Band and a founding member of the Wellington Jazz Orchestra, as well as working regularly with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Wellington, Auckland Philharmonia, and Christchurch Symphony Orchestra. To add to extensive resume, Granville has released a bevy of albums under his own name, including Home, Refractions, Wishful Thinking, and Round the Bend. Granville is a passionate educator, has taught at the New Zealand School of Music and operates a successful YouTube channel, continuing to inspire musicians around the world through performance, recording, and education.

Joining Granville on double bass is Nick Tipping, who returns to the DJC after embodying the works of Charles Mingus in our October concert last year. It is no surprise that as a professional double bassist, radio broadcaster, and three-time winner of the Best Jazz Artist award at the Aotearoa Music Awards, Tipping is a leading figure in the New Zealand music scene. Tipping’s credits demonstrate his vast stylistic range: he has toured with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, recorded with the NZ String Quartet, and is a long-standing member of the classical/klezmer ensemble The Kugels and the award-winning jazz octet The Jac (with recent performer at the DJC Jake Baxendale). A PhD graduate and former Head of Jazz at the New Zealand School of Music, Tipping remains dedicated to music education, empowering students and teachers from primary school to university level. Beyond the stage, you can regularly listen to Tipping as a familiar host on RNZ National and RNZ Concert, where he champions both classical and jazz music for listeners nationwide.
