The Autumn Season at Hanover Hall in 2026 kicks off with the appearance of virtuoso guitarist Lockie Bennett, who will perform his bebop inflected music with an All Star band as part of his upcoming Australasian tour. Lockie is a Wellington based musician who has just released a self-titled album of jazz standards with alto saxophonist Alex Trask and double bassist Elijah Mulheron. For this concert, Bennett will perform tunes from that album, as well as a selection of jazz standards composed and recorded by the greats of the bebop tradition, such as Charlie Parker, Bud Powell and Tadd Dameron.
Since graduating from the New Zealand School of Music in 2021, Lockie has performed and recorded regularly as both a leader and a side man and has become one of the most in-demand straight-ahead jazz guitarists in the country. In 2023, Lockie started a weekly trio residency at The Undercurrent - a Wellington hotspot for local jazz musicians - and in the same year, played across the country with his own trio and quartet. In 2024, Lockie began playing music full-time at a string of previously established music venues and newly acquired residencies at numerous bars across Wellington.
Lockie has become a regular at jazz festivals across the North Island, including the National Festival (held in Tauranga), the Wellington, Waiheke and Martinborough festivals. In 2024, Bennett played several shows in Melbourne during the local Jazz Festival and is now aiming to extend his career with a move to the UK. The players in Lockie’s trios are virtuosos in their own right, with alto saxophonist Alex Trask astonishing listeners with the technical capacity of his lines and his uncanny resemblance to Charlie Parker in this sound and tone. Dunedin audiences are truly fortunate to hear such an accomplished guitar trio at the beginning of their international journey.
