Mayor Sophie Barker talks about books 
which have influenced her life and vision for 
our city.

Sophie graduated from the University of Otago with a 
Bachelor of Commerce in Economics and is an EDIT 
Fellow of the University of Hawaii. She led marketing and 
operations at Larnach Castle and grew the visitation to over 
100,000 people per annum. From 2008 she spent seven 
years at the DCC’s Economic Development Unit as Tourism 
Business Advisor and five years as Marketing Manager for 
conservation organisation Otago Peninsula Trust before 
being elected as a City Councillor in 2019. She became 
Deputy Mayor in 2022/23 and Mayor in 2025. Sophie’s 
goal is to make Dunedin the best place to live in NZ – a city 
that works for everyone.
