- **Event Name**: Between Two Worlds: Our Toroa/Royal Albatross
- **Event Start and End Date**: Tue, 14 Apr, 2026 at 09:00 am (+12:00)
- **Event Description**: Toroa/albatrosses live at the intersection of the local and the global, with Dunedin being one of the few places on Earth these giant ocean wanderers breed within sight of people. In this talk presented by Birds New Zealand, seabird expert and Royal Albatross Centre guide Ela Hunt will delve into the remarkable biology and behaviour of albatrosses, revealing why they are among the most efficient flyers on the planet and so closely tied to healthy seas.

Through the lens of Dunedin’s royals, the talk explores how albatrosses interact with human activities across vast ocean areas. Issues such as fisheries bycatch, plastic pollution, and climate-driven changes reveal the real-world consequences of unsustainable practices. Ela will highlight how local conservation efforts and community stewardship contribute to broader global sustainability goals and the long-term protection of ocean ecosystems.

Birds New Zealand/Te Kāhui Mātai Manu o Aotearoa is the Ornithological Society for New Zealand and our mission is to foster the study, knowledge, and enjoyment of birds.
