"description": "Dundalk Outcomers is a social and befriending group for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people. Our drop-in Centre, located in the Centre of Dundalk, has been open for more than 21 years. This offers a ‘safe space’ for LGBT people to meet, seek support and advice, and host events. As part of our ‘open door drop-in’ policy we offer some light refreshments, a chat or a read in our library 10am to 5pm, five days a week. Our centre is also open four nights and two afternoon a week for specific target groups including Lesbian Night, Gay Men’s Night, Young Adult Night and Youth Drop-In. We run many social events such as barbeques, discos, and visits to other groups. Over the past 21 years we have also held a range of events which have included the wider heterosexual community, e.g. showing the latest LGBT movies in Partnership with An Táin Theater. On an annual basis we organized and host Dundalk LGBT Pride. It has developed into both our adult pride and for the last four years, we have hosted the only LGBT Youth Pride in Ireland designed and run by young people for young people. Our adult Pride and family day have been participated in by the wider community, family and friends of our service users, as well as attracting visitors from around the country. These events have contributed greatly to the wider acceptance of LGBT people in the region, as well as providing opportunities for our service users to become proactively involved in their community, and to be proud of their identity. The second strand of our work is advocacy and the promotion of LGBT rights. We achieve these through the provision of training to the community, voluntary and statutory sectors, and by participating on representative local and national working groups and committees (e.g. the LGBT National Helpline and the Collective Response Initiative for Better Mental Health in Co. Louth Dundalk Positive Mental health forum and Lgbt Ireland)."
