Rites of Passage is a core class of Reclaiming Witchcraft, an ecstatic tradition weaving together magic with social and spiritual justice.

This is a participatory and experiential class that dives into our own personal mythologies, stories, and rights of passage. We will spend time diving into the mysteries, the unconscious, and the power of story. Trance, divination, dreamwork, writing, creative expression, and other practices will be used to forge and deepen our relationship to magical allies and our own stories. All stories welcome. All stages of rites of passage belong.

It is traditional (as much as can be in an anarchist tradition) for each Rites of Passage class to work with a particular myth or story. In an exploration of what decolonial and culturally inclusive witchcraft could be we've chosen to work with "Stories of the Moon". You are invited (not required) to bring a Story of the Moon from your own lineage or experience. We will share and work with the phases of the moon as story, as well as share a few culturally specific Stories of the Moon.

Magic and ritual mean different things to individuals and within various communities and cultures. There will be much opportunity for participants to weave in practices from their own lineages. You do not need to have any particular identity or belief to join in, though it is asked for folks to agree to holding the Principles of Unity as a guide for our time together and have taken Reclaiming class "Elements of Magic" or equivalent.

Whether your story and relationship to Reclaiming magic is currently waxing, waning, full, or dark it is our hope that this offering will hold space for a variety of experiences, identities and ways of being.

COST

Sliding scale $99 - $333
There are 4 low to no-fee spots at $0-$98

We offer a sliding scale as a means of making this class accessible. We aim to honour the work of teachers while also being attuned to the variation in access to financial resources. A registration fee of roughly $300 would be paying the teachers a living wage ($25/hour) for their time. Paying above that supports our lower cost spots. The three teachers will split the income four ways giving one portion in reparation payment to the Quw’utsun peoples.

ACCESSIBILITY

Location

This event will take place on rural/rustic farm, creek, and forest land with a mix of indoor and outdoor time.
When we are indoors it will be in a larger old farmhouse living room. There are multiple entrances to the room, each entrance has 5-10 steps with a handrail.
Outdoor locations will vary depending on weather and people’s needs. There are some walking paths/driveways, but all are unpaved and uneven.
There will be access to one indoors private home bathroom.
The building does not meet ADA standards but folks with wheeled mobility devices have accessed it and the bathroom in the past with significant physical support of others.
We will use lamps and other non-overhead lighting when indoors.
The location is an active farm and housing coop and there will be others on the land who are not involved in our class, including young children. They will give us our space and you will be given clear guidance of what areas are available and not available for you to access.
Scents

Plan to come as free of scents and fragrances as possible, including the use of scented natural products.
Covid Care

We are asking attendees to take the risks of Covid and the wellness of their fellow attendees seriously and to do your best to minimize risk for the 7 days before attending. Knowing that jobs/travel etc. will be different for each, we are asking people to limit their contact with others and especially public spaces and gatherings as much as possible in the 7 days prior to the weekend. We are also asking people to use masks and other preventative measures if they are required to be in higher risk situations during this time.
Everyone will be asked to take a rapid test upon arrival, which we can provide.
All participants are asked to wear a mask when inside.
We will spend as much time outdoors as possible where folks can choose to unmask.
When we are indoors we will have windows open as temperature permits and have air filtration running.
Seating

Our indoor space is a large living room. Seating options will include the floor, folding/wooden chairs, some couch/larger arm chair options. We will move things around to best accommodate space and people’s needs. You are welcome to bring your own folding chair/seat.
There will be some folding camp chairs available for outdoor space but not enough to accommodate everyone. Please bring camp chairs, blankets or whatever else you may need for outdoor seating - if you are unable to bring something but need a chair let us know and we can make sure we have one for you.
Accommodation

You are welcome to commute to and from the event. We will be ending by 9pm at the latest Friday and Saturday evenings and likely starting around 10am Saturday and Sunday mornings. The event is located within ten minutes of the town of Duncan.
It is possible to camp on-site at the farm. You would need to provide your own camping equipment and facilities would be rustic. You would have access to a shared kitchen and a shared indoor bathroom. The kitchen and bathroom are also shared with residents of the coop who will be sparse during class time but may be more present during the periods between class.
If camping would not be accessible to you but you would like support finding other accommodation nearby, or can offer it please indicate this on your registration form.

THE TEACHING TEAM

Bridgid McGowan

Hello! I am a fat white settler cisgender Queer Femme living with disability whose ancestral roots are working-class Irish and Scottish. I grew up on unceded Peskotomuhkati land in colonially named New Brunswick, and am deeply grateful to live on the unceded and traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish), and səl̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations in colonially named Vancouver. I am constantly unsettled (as it should be) by continually educating myself to unlearn white supremist, colonial practices and ways of living, and taking actions to support land back. I have worked in the anti-violence movement as an activist and counsellor since the 1980’s, and currently work as a somatic psychotherapist.

My first Witch Camp was in 1987. Since then I have studied, priestessed, and taught LOTS of magic classes and workshops in community and at Witch Camps in Canada and the US. I am dedicated to Danu and devoted to Brigit, and the Elements have been integrated into my daily practice for so many years, and am very excited about this weekend . As a priestess, teacher, and musician I love creating and facilitating ritual/experiences that help folx go into the Mysterious realms to find their own innate healing and magical relationships and expression, and to join in community. I also bring humour, and as a Crone ‘in training’, a wicked cackle wherever I go.

Shannon Rose

Hi :) My name is Shannon Rose (she/her) and I've been involved in Reclaiming since a dream led me down the west coast of Turtle Island to my first California Witchcamp in 2015. I have been an organizer of Pleasures of Beltane camp and I taught my first Elements of Magic class with Sharon and Bridgid last Spring!

I live and play in Quw'utsun, the place of the Quw'utsun Hwulmuhw (colonially known as the cowichan valley on vancouver island). My ancestors made their way to Turtle Island in various waves of colonization, primarily as farmers, from the countries known as Ireland, Germany, England, and Poland.

I'm a queer human, passionate about dreams, pleasure, and magic. Sex and spirituality are golden threads that have woven their way throughout my life. This has taken shape through nearly a decade of various forms of sex and healing related work. I work as a counsellor, primarily supporting sex workers and those who have experienced sexualized violence.

Sharon Pink

Hello, I’m Sharon Pink. I live my time on Squamish, Musqueam, Tsleil Waututh and Sq'éwlets territory, striving to be a respectful guest through reparations, listening, tending the earth and responding to calls to action.

I’m a queer leatherFemme witch and priestess who has been part of Reclaiming communities since 2012 and began teaching here in 2017. You’ll find me organizing, teaching and priestessing workshops, rituals and classes on divination, kink, magic and art, organizing leather care hangouts and other community connecting events.

My ancestral lineages from Portugal and Poland have been a portal for my close, yet quiet, connections with Wilgefortis and Marzanna.

I aspire to be in ways that are anti-white supremacy, fat liberatory, gender affirming, leatherQueer celebratory, Elder & crone honoring and sex worker positive.
